Reaching a standing height of approximately 1.2 meters, the shoebill stork is a bird of remarkable stature. Its body is covered in slate-gray feathers, providing excellent camouflage amidst the reeds and papyrus of its wetland home. The most striking feature is its massive, broad bill, which resembles a Dutch wooden clog or a shoe—hence its common name.
